2,3-Dihydro-5-hydroxy-4,7-dimethyl-1H-indole-1-carbaldehyde (5.74 g, 30 mmol) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (100 ml) and to the solution were added potassium carbonate (8.29 g, 60 mmol), potassium iodide (0.50 g, 3 mmol) and 3-chloro-2-methyl-1-propene (4.41 ml, 45 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into cold water (300 ml), and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine and dried over sodium sulfate, and then the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel. (hexane:ethyl acetate=6:1) to obtain 6.00 g of the title compound.
