Procedure

A solution of the ketone 9 (1.03 g, 3.28 mmol) in dry THF (20 mL) at 0° C. under nitrogen was treated, via syringe, with lithium tri-tert-butoxyaluminohydride (1.0 M, 1.5 eq, 4.92 mL, 4.92 mmol). After 2 h the solution was poured into 1N HCl (100 mL). The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with ether (3×50 mL). The organic layers were combined, washed with saturated aqueous NaCl solution (50 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a white solid (1.08 g), Rf0.3 (30% EtOAc/hexane), which was used without further purification.
