To a solution of 4-methoxybenzyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (7.0 g, 27 mmole) in dry N,N-dimethylforuiamide (50 ml) was added potassium carbonate (4.15 g, 30 mmole) and 2-bromoethanol. The mixture was stirred 48 hours at 80° C., evaporated under reduced pressure and ethyl acetate and water were added. The organic phase was washed five times with water and dried with sodium sulfate. The solution was evaporated under reduced pressure and the product was isolated by silica gel column chromatography with hexane/ethyl acetate.
