First Aid
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
(General first aid procedures)
Nonfire Spill Response
SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: Should a spill occur while you are handling this chemical, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with 60-70% ethanol and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with 60-70% ethanol to pick up any remaining material. Seal the absorbent paper, and any of your clothes, which may be contaminated, in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with 60-70% ethanol followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

2008 Notice of Intended Changes: These substances, with their corresponding values and notations, comprise those for which (1) a limit is proposed for the first time, (2) a change in the Adopted value is proposed, (3) retention as an NIC is proposed, or (4) withdrawal of the Documentation and adopted TLV is proposed. In each case, the proposals should be considered trial values during the period they are on the NIC. These proposals were ratified by the ACGIH Board of Directors and will remain on the NIC for approximately one year following this ratification. If the Committee neither finds nor receives any substantive data that changes its scientific opinion regarding an NIC TLV, the Committee may then approve its recommendation to the ACGIH Board of Directors for adoption. If the Committee finds or receives substantive data that change its scientific opinion regarding an NIC TLV, the Committee may change its recommendation to the ACGIH Board of Directors for the matter to be either retained on or withdrawn from the NIC. THE LETHAL ORAL DOSE FOUND FOR RATS IS OF THE ORDER OF 5 G/KG BODY WEIGHT; BEFORE DEATH THE ANIMALS SHOWED SIGNS OF GASTROENTERITIS (SEVERE DIARRHEA).
RATS INGESTING DIETS CONTAINING 0.05% & 0.25% FOR 30 DAYS SHOWED NORMAL WT GAIN @ 0.05% LEVEL...BUT RETARDED WT GAIN & ENLARGED LIVERS @ 5-FOLD THIS LEVEL. /IN 90 DAY STUDIES NO TOXICITY/...RESULTED @ 0.005% LEVEL...BUT MALE RATS ON 0.05% DIET ATE & GREW SLIGHTLY LESS...NO PATHOLOGIC CHANGES WERE OBSERVABLE.
SANTONOX (80 MG/KG/DAY) GIVEN ORALLY FOR 10 DAYS TO RATS BEGINNING ON 5TH DAY AFTER TRANSPLANTATION OF YOSHIDA SARCOMA ENHANCED TUMOR DEVELOPMENT. THIS EFFECT MAY BE OWING TO DIRECT INFLUENCE ON REDOX PROCESSES WITHIN TUMOR CELLS OR OF LOWERED RESISTANCE OF ORGANISM.
4,4'-Thiobis(6-tert-butyl-m-cresol) was tested for mutagenicity in Salmonella/microsome preincubation assay using a protocol approved by the National Toxicology Program. A wide range of doses (0, 33, 100, 333, 1000, 3333, and 10,000 ug/plate) was tested in four Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537) in the presence and absence of Aroclor-induced rat or hamster liver S9. These tests were negative and the highest ineffective dose level tested (not causing the formation of a precipitate) in any Salmonella tester strain was 100 ug/plate.
... CONCLUSIONS: Under the conditions of these 2-year feed studies, there was no evidence of carcinogenic activity of TBBC in male or female F344/N rats administered 500, l,000, or 2,500 ppm or in male or female B6C3F1, mice administered 250, 500, or 1,000 ppm.
National Toxicology Program Studies
... Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies were conducted by administering 4,4'-thiobis(6-t-butyl-m-cresol) TBBC (99% pure) in feed to groups of male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice for ... 2 years. ... 2 YEAR STUDY IN RATS: ... Groups of 115 male and 75 female F344/N rats were fed diets containing 0, 500, 1,000, or 2,500 ppm TBBC for 2 years. Based on average daily feed consumption, these exposure levels resulted in a daily ingestion of TBBC of approximately 20, 40, or 100 mg/kg body weight for males and 20, 45, or 120 mg/kg body weight for females. 2 YEAR STUDY IN MICE: ... The doses selected for the 2 yr study were 250, 500, and 1,000 ppm. Groups of 80 male and 80 female mice were fed diets containing 0, 250, 500, or 1,000 ppm TBBC for 2 yr. Based on average daily feed consumption, these exposure levels resulted in the daily ingestion of approximately 30, 60, or 145 mg TBBC/kg body weight for males and 45, 110, or 255 mg TBBC/kg body weight for females.
