Procedure

To 4-bromo-2-formylphenylformamide (18.07 g), ethyl 4-bromobutyrate (30.9 g) and potassium carbonate (21.9 g) was added DMF (160 ml), and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 24 hours. The mixture was dilute with ethyl acetate (1400 ml), washed with water (300 ml×3) and saturated brine (150 ml), and dried with magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified with silica gel column chromatography (300 g, hexane:ethyl acetate=4:1→1:1) to give ethyl 4-(4-bromo-2, N-diformylanilino)butyrate (21.56 g, 80%).
