Corrosives
Fluorophosphoric acid, anhydrous appears as a colorless liquid. Corrosive to metals and tissue. Used in metal cleaning, as a chemical polishing agent and as a catalyst.
Colorless liquid; [Hawley]
Hydrolyzes when diluted with water producing phosphoric acid.
On cooling it does not crystallize but sets to a rigid glass at -78 °C.
Little decomposition occurs up to 185 °C under vacuum but it cannot be distilled.
Anhydrous acid has no oxidizing character.
An aqueous solution shows the normal behavior of a dibasic acid; the first neutralization point is at pH 3.5 and the second at pH 8.5. Conductance measurements, however, indicate that it behaves as a monophasic acid in aqueous solution.
Colorless, viscous liquid. Miscible with water.

FLUOROPHOSPHORIC ACID neutralizes chemical bases (for example: amines and metal hydroxides) to form salts. Neutralization can generate dangerously large amounts of heat in small spaces. May react with active metals, including such structural metals as aluminum and iron, to release hydrogen, a flammable gas. Can initiate the polymerization of certain classes of organic compounds. Reacts with cyanide compounds to release gaseous hydrogen cyanide. May generate flammable and/or toxic gases in contact with dithiocarbamates, isocyanates, mercaptans, nitrides, nitriles, sulfides, and strong reducing agents. Incompatible with sodium tetrahydroborate. May react with sulfites, nitrites, thiosulfates (to give H2S and SO3), dithionites (SO2), and carbonates. May catalyze (increase the rate) of chemical reactions.
/GUIDE 154: SUBSTANCES - TOXIC AND/OR CORROSIVE (NON-COMBUSTIBLE)/ Health: TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution. /Fluorophosphoric acid, anhydrous/
/GUIDE 154: SUBSTANCES - TOXIC AND/OR CORROSIVE (NON-COMBUSTIBLE)/ Fire or Explosion: Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated. /Fluorophosphoric acid, anhydrous/
/GUIDE 154: SUBSTANCES - TOXIC AND/OR CORROSIVE (NON-COMBUSTIBLE)/ Public Safety: CALL Emergency Response Telephone Number ... . As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters (75 feet) for solids. Keep unauthorized personnel away. Stay upwind. Keep out of low areas. Ventilate enclosed areas. /Fluorophosphoric acid, anhydrous/
/GUIDE 154: SUBSTANCES - TOXIC AND/OR CORROSIVE (NON-COMBUSTIBLE)/ Protective Clothing: Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing provides limited protection in fire situations ONLY; it is not effective in spill situations where direct contact with the substance is possible. /Fluorophosphoric acid, anhydrous/

MATERIALS WHICH ARE TOXIC AS STORED OR WHICH CAN DECOMP INTO TOXIC COMPONENTS...SHOULD BE STORED IN COOL, WELL-VENTILATED PLACE, OUT OF DIRECT RAYS OF SUN, AWAY FROM...FIRE HAZARD &...PERIODICALLY INSPECTED AND MONITORED. INCOMPATIBLE MATERIALS SHOULD BE ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER.
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
THE BASIC VENTILATION METHODS ARE LOCAL EXHAUST VENTILATION AND DILUTION OR GENERAL VENTILATION.
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants.

Immediate precautionary measure
STRONG IRRITANT TO TISSUE.
IN A DOUBLE-BLIND TRIAL WITH MONOFLUOROPHOSPHATE (25 MG FLUORIDE/DAY) GIVEN TO 460 AGED PERSONS (237 TREATED, 233 CONTROLS) FOR 8 MO, NO DIFFERENCE WAS OBSERVED IN HEIGHT, ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL, OR MORTALITY. FRACTURES AND EXACERBATION OF ARTHROSIS WERE MORE FREQUENT IN THE FLUORIDE GROUP. VERTEBRAL X-RAY FILMS SHOWED NO DIFFERENCE. THE FREE IONIZED FLUORIDE LEVELS IN THE PLASMA OF THE FLUORIDE-TREATED GROUP WERE STILL TWICE AS HIGH 2 MO AFTER TREATMENT ENDED.
SEE FLUORIDES. INORG FLUORIDES ARE GENERALLY HIGHLY IRRITANT AND TOXIC. ACUTE EFFECTS RESULTING FROM EXPOSURE TO FLUORINE COMPOUNDS ARE DUE TO HYDROGEN FLUORIDE. /FLUORIDES/
The toxic effects of monofluorophosphate (MFP) are attributable to the fluoride ion released by the in vivo hydrolysis of the parent cmpd. The monofluorophosphate ion appears to play no role. The acute toxicity of monofluorophosphate is somewhat less than that of sodium fluoride, due to the lesser availability of fluoride in the short term from monofluorophosphate. In the long term, monofluorophosphate produces virtually the same picture of renal effects and skeletal storage of fluoride as does sodium fluoride.
Ingested monofluorophosphate (MFP) is hydrolyzed by phosphatases mainly in the lumen and wall of the small intestine. monofluorophosphate hydrolysis is insignificant in the saliva and the stomach and absorption is greatest in the small intestine, mainly or entirely as fluoride ions. Liver tissue also rapidly hydrolyzes monofluorophosphate, and monofluorophosphate ions have not been found parenterally. The post-absorption physiology of monofluorophosphate therefore appears to be identical with that of sodium fluoride. However, the absorption peaks of fluoride in blood and other body fluids and tissues occur earlier and are higher after sodium fluoride ingestion, unless fluoride is bound by calcium ions in the digestive tract. Calcium ions have a comparatively small effect on fluoride absorption from monofluorophosphate, and complex-bound calcium has practically no effect.
THE AMOUNT OF TOTAL FLUORIDE RETAINED AFTER BRUSHING WITH A DENTIFRICE WAS AN AVG 19.3% OF THAT APPLIED, WHILE THAT AFTER TOPICAL APPLICATION OF 2% NAF SOLN FOR 4 MIN WAS 13.6%. AFTER RINSING WITH 10 ML OF 500 PPM NAF SOLN FOR 30 SEC 11.6%, & AFTER CRUNCHING TABLET CONTAINING 1 MG F, 8.9% WAS RETAINED. AFTER MOUTH RINSING OR TOPICAL APPLICATION, RESIDUAL FLUORIDE WAS FOUND IN SALIVA FOR 24-48 HR. SALIVARY FLUORIDE WAS FOUND FOR ONLY 90-120 MIN AFTER APPLICATION OF MONOFLUOROPHOSPHATE CONTAINING DENTIFRICE OR FLUORIDE TABLETS.
