Procedure
A mixture of 4-ethyl-5-formamido-7-methylbenzimidazole (1.7 g, 8.36 mmol), potassium carbonate (2.0 g, 14.4 mmol) and 6N hydrochloric acid (34 mL) in methanol (34 mL) is heated to reflux for 1 hour. The mixture is cooled to room temperature, brought to pH 9 with ammonium hydroxide and rotary evaporated. The residue is purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (chloroform:methanol 9:1) to afford 5-amino-4-ethyl-7-methylbenzimidazole as a tan solid.
