To a solution of 3-cyano-3-phenylamino-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (1.1 g, 3.65 mmol) in DMSO (10 ml) was added potassium carbonate (76 mg, 0.54 mmol) and hydrogen peroxide (35% in water solution) (0.73 ml, 8.4 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at RT overnight. Further portions of potassium carbonate (76 mg, 0.54 mmol) and hydrogen peroxide (35% in water solution) (0.73 ml, 8.4 mmol) were added and stirring continued for 24 hrs. The mixture was diluted with EtOAc (10 ml) and washed with brine (30 ml). The organics were separated and the aqueous was extracted with EtOAc (10 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. Purification of the crude product by chromatography on silica eluting with 0-50% EtOAc in iso-hexane afforded the title compound.
