Procedure

Methyl 3-bromo-4-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]benzoate (100 mg, 0.291 mmol) was dried with a vacuum pump, and dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (2.9 mL). Under ice-cold conditions, sodium hydride (15.2 mg, 0.350 mmol) and benzyl bromide (38 μL, 0.320 mmol) were added sequentially, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 hours. The reaction solution was added water under ice-cold conditions, extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo. The obtained residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography (hexane/acetone). The title compound (43 mg (yield 34.3%)) was obtained as a yellow oil.
