Procedure

To a solution of [1-methyl-5-(5-nitropyridin-2-yloxy)-1H-indol-2-yl]piperazin-1-ylmethanone (2.09 g, 5.5 mmol) in 1,2-dichloroethane (45 mL) were added benzaldehyde (1.16 g, 10 mmol), sodium triacetoxyborohydride (2.33 g, 11 mmol) and acetic acid (0.7 mL, 11 mmol) under ice cooling. The reaction mixture was stirred for 14 hours at room temperature under a nitrogen atomoshere. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and to the residue was added water. The mixture was neutralized with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and extracted with AcOEt. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (CH2Cl2:MeOH=60:1) to give 2.66 g of the title compound as a pale brown oil.
