Procedure
Methyl 4-sulfinobenzoate (4), (12.7 g, 63.43 mMole) and 1-bromododecane (17.4 g, 69.77 mMole) were dissolved in dimethylformamide (100 mL). Potassium carbonate (10.5 g, 76.12 mMole) was added and the mixture heated to 70° C. for 3 hours with good stirring. At the end of this period of time the mixture was cooled and carefully poured into ice cold 2N-HCl (500 mL). The crude methyl 4-dodecylsulfonylbenzoate, a white solid, was filtered off, washed well with water and used as such in the next step.
