To a solution of the title compound of Example 164 (48 mg, 0.146 mmol) in 1:1 tetrahydrofuran:H2O (4 mL) was added K2CO3 (30 mg, 0.219 mmol), K2OSO2(OH)4 (7 mg) and K3Fe(CN)6 (72 mg, 0.219 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours whereupon water and ethyl acetate were added. Following extractive work-up, the organic layer was then dried, filtered, and concentrated. The residue was dissolved in 1:1 tetrahydrofuran:H2O (2 mL) and sodium periodate (156 mg, 50.73 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min whereupon water and ethyl acetate were added. Following extractive work-up, the organic layer was then dried, filtered, and concentrated. Silica gel chromatography of the residue, eluting with 30% ethyl acetate in hexane gave Intermediate 230(a) as a pale yellow solid (11 mg, 0.034 mmol) in 22% yield.
