2.5 ml of a 2.5 M solution of n-butyllithium in hexane are added dropwise at 5° C. to a solution of 1 g (5.5 mmol) of 5-(2-ethoxyethoxy)-2-methylpyridine in 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture is stirred at 0°-5° C. for 10 minutes and then 530 mg (6 mmol) of N,N-dimethylacetamide dissolved in a little tetrahydrofuran are added. After stirring at room temperature for 90 minutes, the pH is adjusted to 5 with dilute hydrochloric acid and the tetrahydrofuran is stripped off. The residue is extracted with ethyl acetate, and the organic phase is dried with sodium sulphate and evaporated. Yield: 580 mg (47% of theory), content according to GC/MS: 75%.
