A suspension of milled potassium carbonate (0.5 g), quinoline from Step 2 (1.1 g), and methylbromoacetate (4.0 ml) in acetone (25 ml) were refluxed overnight. The reaction mixture is poured onto water, extracted with ethyl acetate dried and evaporated. Chromatography of the residue on SiO2 using 30 to 40% ether/hexane afforded the title compound: m.p. 110-112°.
