Procedure

A 1.8 g quantity of the 4-(3-carboxyphenylamino)-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol prepared in Example 24 was dissolved in 30 ml of THF, and the solution was added dropwise at room temperature to a suspension of 1.7 g of LiAlH4 in 150 ml of ethyl ether with stirring. Then the resulting mixture was refluxed for 3.5 hours. After cooling, water-containing ethyl ether and then water were carefully added to the reaction mixture to decompose the excess LiAlH4. Subsequently the organic layer was separated, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give a crude product. The crude product was dissolved in 100 ml of ethyl ether, and 6 ml of 4N hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate was added to the solution. The crystals thus precipitated were filtered, washed with ethyl ether and air-dried, giving 1.5 g of the title compound (Compound 31).
