To a solution of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (3.6 g, 29 mmol) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (25 mL) was added 5-chloro-2-pyridinol (4.1 g, 32 mmol) and K2CO3 (4.1 g, 30 mmol) at room temperature under argon. The mixture was heated to reflux for 4 h, cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate (150 mL), washed with water and brine, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography to yield the title compound as a white solid (0.59 g, 2.5 mmol, 8%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 9.99 (s, 1H), 8.16 (s, 1H), 7.94 (d, J=7.7, 2H), 7.27 (d, J=7.7, 2H), 7.71 (d, J=8.6, 1H), 6.99 (d, J=8.6, 1H).
