A solution of 0.953 g of tert-butyl 3-hydroxy-4-{4-[3-(2-methoxybenzyloxy)propoxy]phenyl}piperidine-1-carboxylate in 10 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide is admixed with stirring at room temperature with 0.16 g of sodium hydride dispersions (60%). The reaction mixture is stirred at 60° C. over 10 minutes, admixed with 0.191 g of chloroacetic acid and then stirred at 60° C. over 24 hours. The reaction mixture is admixed with 0.5N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×). The combined organic phases are washed with brine, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated by evaporation. The title compound is obtained as a yellow oil from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60F). Rf=0.20 (95:5 dichloromethane-methanol); Rt=5.18.
