Procedure
To a solution of 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyacetophenone from Example 45A (15 g, 51.2 mmol) in DMF (51 mL) was added K2CO3 (10.2 g, 74.1 mmol) and benzyl bromide (6.0 mL, 50.7 mmol). The reaction stirred at room temperature for 45 minutes. It was diluted with water (200 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3×75 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with 2M NaOH solution (2×75 mL), water (75 mL), and brine (75 mL) and then dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give 1-(4-benzyloxy-3,5-dibromo-phenyl)-ethanone as an off white solid (14.3 g, 37.2 mmol, 73% yield).
