Procedure

EX-603A)To a toluene (15 mL) solution of 2-chloropyrimidine (1.00 g, 8.7 mmol) was added 3-formylphenylboronic acid (1.42 g, 9.5 mmol) and DMF (8 mL). To the resulting solution was added K2CO3 (2.63 g, 19.0 mmol) and Pd(PPh3)4 (0.52 g, 0.45 mmol). The slurry was heated to reflux under argon for 18 h. The cooled mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to an oil. Purification by flash chromatography on silica gel eluting with 20% ethyl acetate in hexane gave 0.63 g (39%) of the desired 3-(2-pyrimidinyl)benzaldehyde product as a brown oil which solidified upon standing. MS: m/z=185.1 [M+H]+.
