A mixture of 4-propyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1-dioxide (20.74 g, 0.117 mol), phenylmethyl bromide (22.09 g, 0.129 mol), and tetrabutylammonium bromide (3.77 g, 0.012 mol) in toluene (400 ml) and DMF (50 ml) was refluxed for 40 hours, cooled, and poured over ice/water. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography to afford 11.1 g of 2-phenylmethyl-4-propyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1-dioxide (Formula VII: R1 =propyl; R2 =R3 =H).
