Into a reaction vessel was charged 4-cyano-2-ethoxy-α-bromotoluene (16) (20.2 g, 0.084 mol) and N,N′-dimethylformamide (200 ml), and N-hydroxyphthalimide (14.4 g, 0.088 mol) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (12.2 g, 0.088 mol) were added to this, and the mixture was stirred for 2 hours at approximately 80° C. Water was added to the reaction liquid and the precipitated solid was filtrated. This was dried, to obtain N-(4-cyano-2-ethoxybenzyloxy)phthalimide (17) (27.0 g, yield from (16) is 99%).
