Procedure

To a suspension of sodium hydride (60%, 0.10 g (2.50 mmol)) in DMF (3.0 ml), 4-chloro-N-cyclopropyl-2-nitroaniline (0.40 g (1.88 mmol)) was added with stirring at room temperature. To the resulting mixture, after 15 minutes' stirring at room temperature, p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (0.38 g (1.99 mmol)) was added. After one hour's stirring at room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and saturated sodium chloride solution, successively, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:3) as eluent, to give 0.42 g (61%) of the title compound as yellow crystals
