To a solution of 3-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid (5.0 g, 0.03 mol) in DMF (25 ml) was added potassium carbonate (12.4 g, 0.09 mol). The reaction was allowed to stir for twenty minutes at which time benzyl bromide (8.9 ml, 0.075 mol) was added to the flask. The reaction was allowed to stir overnight. Solvent was removed. The reaction was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to yield the title compound (9.9 g, 99% yield): ES-MS (m/z) 243 [M+H]+.
