Procedure
To 1-chloromethyl-2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl-benzene (1.5 g, 6.2 mmol), N-methylpiperazine (0.83 mL, 7.5 mmol), and THF (31 mL) was added NaHCO3 (1.43 g, 17.1 mmol). The mixture was heated overnight at 75° C. in a sealed tube. The cooled reaction was filtered, concentrated, diluted with CH2Cl2, and extracted with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to yield 1-methyl-4-(2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl-benzyl)-piperazine.
