Procedure

A solution of 2,6-dichloro-3-nitropyridine (46) (0.5 g) in acetonitrile (20 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and treated with triethylamine (0.36 mL) followed by 3-(aminomethyl)pyridine (0.26 mL). The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at 0° C. and eight hours at RT. The resulting solution, which contained the intermediate 6-chloro-3-nitro-N-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)pyridin-2-amine (47), was transferred to a sealed tube containing benzimidazole (0.84 g) and potassium carbonate (3 g) and heated at 70° C. for 16 h. The mixture was cooled and filtered. The precipitated was washed with water and air-dried to provide 239 mg of the title compound (48).
