Procedure

A mixture of 24 g biphenylacetic acid ethyl ester and 8.2 g ethyl formate is added dropwise while stirring to a suspension of 2.4 g sodium hydride in 250 ml ether. The reaction mixture is stirred for 2 hours at room temperature and cold water is carefully added. The aqueous phase is acidified to pH 2 and the product is extracted with ether. The extract is dried and concentrated by evaporation.
