Procedure

The product from Step 1 and 1-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)piperidin-4-one are heated together in a solvent such as THF or methanol. The cooled mixture is treated with sodium cyanpborohydride to give 1-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)-4-(3-hydroxymethyl-2-pyridylamino) piperidine.
