Procedure

To a stirred solution of 1.76 g of 4(R)-allylthio-3(S)-[1(R)-{dimethyl-(2-methylprop-2-yl)silyloxy}ethyl]azetidin-2-one in 60 ml dry DMF were added 3.52 g of finely ground K2CO3 and 0.6 ml of methyl bromoacetate. After 18 hours, the mixture was filtered and then partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The separated organic layer was washed with water and dried over MgSO4. Evaporation in vacuo afforded a crude product which was chromatographed on silica gel. Elution with ethyl acetate-hexane mixtures afforded 1.56 g of the title compound as a pale yellow oil.
