To a solution of methyl 3-[4-[2-(2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzoxazin-4-yl)ethoxy]phenyl]-2-ethoxypropanoate (0.6 g, 1.5 mmol) obtained in example 2 in dry tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) was added lithium diisopropyl amide (5.25 μL, 0.5 mL solution in THF/hexane) at −78° C. After stirring for 1 h at −78° C., methyl iodide (0.75 mL) was added and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature (ca 25° C.) and stirred for further 20 h at the same temperature. Water (20 mL) was added, acidified with 1 N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×25 mL). The combined ethyl acetate layer was washed with water (25 mL), brine (25 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound (0.5 g, 80%) as an oil.
