To a solution of methyl N-[(2S)-2-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoyl]-L-leucinate (7a) (2.13 g) dissolved in THF (21 mL) was added an aqueous 2.3 M LiOH solution (17 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours at room temperature, diluted with 1.2 N HCl (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with brine and concentrated to give the desired product (1.75 g, 87%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.92-0.96 (m, 12H), 1.50-1.71 (m, 5H), 1.82-1.90 (m, 1H), 4.17-4.22 (m, 1H), 4.50-4.57 (m, 1H), 7.26 (d, 1H).
