Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 4-(7-bromo-2-chloro-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butanoate (1.57 g, 4.54 Mmol), 2,4-di-chloroaniline (2.21 g, 13.6 mmol), p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (930 mg, 4.89 mmol) and xylene (8.0 mL) was stirred at 150° C. for 3 hr. The mixture was neutralized with aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel eluting with a 5-30% ethyl acetate/n-hexane gradient mixture. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a colorless solid (1.61 g, 3.42 mmol, 75%).
