To a suspension of 2-chloro-5-methyl aniline (9, 1.00 g, 7.06 mmol) and K2CO3 (2.80 g, 28.2 mmol) in DMF (20 mL) was added CS2 (0.50 mL, 8.50 mmol) under N2 at room temperature. The reaction mixture was heated at 150° C. for 16 h. After cooling, the reaction mixture was diluted with water (30 mL) and acidified with 1N HCl. The precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried over P2O5 under vacuum to yield compound 10 (0.35 g, 27%).
