A mixture of 3-bromomethyl-1-(2,4-dimethoxy-benzyl)-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-pyridine-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (4.43 g, 10.8 mmol), (toluene-4-sulfonylamino)-acetic acid methyl ester (2.89 mg, 11.9 mmol), sodium iodide (3.24 g, 21.6 mmol) and potassium carbonate (2.99 g, 21.6 mmol) in DMF (95 mL) was stirred at r.t. for 16 h. Brine (150 mL) was added, and the resulting suspension was extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over MgSO4. After evaporating the solvent in vacuo, the crude product was purified by chromatography (0-80% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 4.2 g of the title compound. MS: (+) m/z 595.32 (M+Na).
