A mixture of 5-bromo-2-bromomethyl-6-oxo-1-phenyl-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2.82 g, 7.03 mmol), (toluene-4-sulfonylamino)-acetic acid methyl ester (1.71 g, 7.03 mmol), sodium iodide (2 g, 14.1 mmol) and potassium carbonate (1.94 g, 14.1 mmol) in DMF (60 mL) was stirred at r.t. for 48 h. Brine (120 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over MgSO4. After the solvent was evaporated in vacuo, the crude product was chromatographed (0-60% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 2.67 g of the title compound. MS: (+) m/z 585.21, 587.10 (M+Na, 79/81Br).
