A stirred mixture of ethyl 4-(5-fluoro-3-hydroxyphenyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carboxylate (2.01 g, 7.5 mmol), 4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)benzyl chloride hydrochloride (1.82 g, 7.5 mmol) and potassium carbonate (5.18 g, 37.5 mmol) in DMF (30 ml) was heated at 100° C. for 1.33 hr. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with a mixture of ethyl acetate and toluene (2:1, 200 ml), and washed with water (4×100 ml) and brine (100 ml), dried (magnesium sulfate) and concentrated to give 3.38 g of crude product as amber solids. Recrystallization from a mixture of isopropyl ether (25 ml) and ethyl acetate (2 ml) gave the titled compound (2.22 g, 68%).
