Procedure

To a solution of (±)-cis tert-butyl 6-methyl-4-oxo-3,3a,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-c]quinoline-2(9bH)-carboxylate (0.5 g, 1.66 mmol) in 10 mL of DMF and 5 mL of THF was added sodium hydride (0.2 g, 60% dispersion in mineral oil, 5.0 mmol). The mixture was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 1 h and then there was added iodomethane (0.25 mL, 4.0 mmol). The reaction was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 18 h. The reaction mixture was poured into brine and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organics were washed with water and brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography to afford 0.47 g (90%) of (±)-cis tert-butyl 5,6-dimethyl-4-oxo-3,3a,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-c]quinoline-2(9bH)-carboxylate.
