To a solution of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-7-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-4-oxo-4H-chromene-8-carbaldehyde (7.95 g, 23.2 mmol) and benzyl bromide (7.93 g, 46.4 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (200 ml) is added K2CO3 (9.61 g, 69.5 mmol), and the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 96 h. The mixture is poured into ice/water, extracted with CH2Cl2, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting solid residue is stirred with hexane/ethyl acetate for 1 h, the solvent is decanted, and the solid is stirred with hexane/diethyl ether for 16 h. The title compound is collected by filtration and washed with hexane to afford a pale brown solid.
