Procedure
p-Toluenesulphonic acid (20 mg, 0.12 mmol) was added to a solution of the benzonitrile of Example 16 (1 g, 3.94 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (30 ml). 3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyran (664 mg, 7.9 mmol) was then added dropwise at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature, under nitrogen, for 15 hours. It was then evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 ml) and aqueous sodium bicarbonate (50 ml). The organic layers were washed with brine (50 ml), dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide the title compound (1.93 mg, 100%).
