Procedure
To a solution of 5-methyl-4-phenyl-1H-pyrazole (5.0 g, 31.6 mmol) in THF (40 mL) and water (40 mL) were added sodium iodide (4.74 g, 31.6 mmol), iodine (12.03 g, 47.4 mmol), and K2CO3 (4.37 g, 31.6 mmol) at room temperature. The reaction was refluxed for 2 h and then quenched with aqueous Na2SO3 (10%). The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a colorless oil (2.5 g). LCMS m/z=284.7 [M+H]+; 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 2.26 (s, 3H), 7.24-7.54 (m, 5H), 13.13 (s, 1H).
