A mixture of 2,4-dichloronicotinic acid (5.0 g, 26 mmol), benzyl bromide (3.7 mL, 31 mmol) and K2CO3 (7.2 g, 52 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. Water was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined and washed with water, brine, dried over sodium sulfate, evaporated and then purified by silica chromatography (0-7% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to give benzyl 2,4-dichloronicotinate (7.0 g, 96%).
