Into a 100-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a mixture of 4-cyclobutyl-5-formyl-2-methylbenzoic acid (compound 82.4, 500 mg, 2.29 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL) and sodium bicarbonate (390 mg, 4.64 mmol). With stirring, methyl iodide (430 μL, 6.90 mmol) was added drop-wise and the resulting mixture was stirred for 5 h at room temperature. The reaction was then diluted with EtOAc (50 mL) and the mixture was washed with brine (4×10 mL). The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 0.40 g (crude) of the title compound as a brown oil
