A suspension of 0.88 g of 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-[2-(4-carboxyphenyl)ethenyl]pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine in 20 mL of acetic anhydride containing 0.05 g of 4-dimethylaminopyridine was heated under nitrogen at 120° C. for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature. Fifty milliliters of ether were added and the resulting yellow solid was collected by filtration to yield 0.95 g (84%) of the title compound; mp>300° C.; IR (Nujol) 3350, 3150, 1800, 1670, 1600 cm-1.
