A solution of 3-acetyl-5-chloro-2-ethoxy-6-methylbenzaldehyde (0.58 g, 2.4 mmol) and sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate (116 mg, 0.844 mmol) in acetonitrile (11.8 mL) and water (2.5 mL) was cooled in an ice bath. 30% Hydrogen peroxide (0.98 mL, 9.6 mmol) was added followed by solid sodium chlorite (0.545 g, 4.82 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 1 h. The mixture was diluted with 1 M HCl solution, and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give the desired product (0.67 g, 100%). LCMS calculated for C12H13ClO4Na (M+Na)+: m/z=279.1; Found: 279.0.
