Sodium triacetoxyborohydride (6.2 g, 29.4 mmol, 2 eq.) was added to a solution of 4-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (3.0 g; 14.7 mmol; 1.0 eq.), DIEA (2.5 mL; 14.7 mmol; 1.0 eq.) and 3,3,3-Trifluoropropanal (2.4 mL; 29.4 mmol; 2.0 eq.) in DCE (60 mL). The reaction mixture was heated at 50° C. for 2 h and quenched by addition of a saturated solution of NH4Cl (50 mL). The phases were separated and organic phase was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to give a brown crude. Purification by flash chromatography on silica (EtOAc:heptane) afforded the title compound as a yellow solid (2.0 g, 45%). UPLC/MS: (MS+) 301.4.
