To 4-bromobenzaldehyde, 18-a, (50 g, 0.27 mol) in dichloromethane (500 mL) were added (S)-2-methylpropane-2-sulfinamide (43 g, 0.36 mol), PPTS (6.7 g, 0.027 mmol) and anhydrous CuSO4 (131 g, 0.82 mol) and the resulting mixture was stirred at 37° C. overnight. The mixture was then filtrated and the filtrate was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by column chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate=20/1) to provide the product, 19-a, (70 g, 71%).
