Procedure

To a solution of 1-(1-(t-butoxycarbonyl)amino-2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl)carbonyl-4-(benzyl)piperazine (0.20 g, 0.44 mmol) in a solution of CH2Cl2 (3 mL) was added trifluoroacetic acid (3 mL). The resultant mixture was stirred at ambient temperature. After 18 hours, the mixture was concentrated in vacuo to afford a yellow oil. This was dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed with an aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The organic layer was separated, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 0.17 g of a clear, colorless film. This was dissolved in ether and treated with an ethereal solution of HCl, resulting in formation of a white precipitate. Concentration afforded 0.18 g of 1-(1-amino-2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl)carbonyl-4-(benzyl)piperazine as a white solid; NMR (CDCl3) 7.4 (m, 7), 7.1 (m, 2), 4.0 (t, 1), 3.7-3.1 (m, 4), 2.8 (m, 2), 2.4-2.2 (m, 5), 1.8 (m, 1) ppm.
