A mixture of 4-methylphenoxy phenyl methane (2g) was suspended in aqueous sodium dichromate solution (20ml. 50%) and concentrated sulphuric acid (10ml) added dropwise with stirring. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight then warmed on a water bath for 1hr. The mixture was cooled, diluted with water and the 4-carboxyphenoxy phenyl methane (m.p. 188°) isolated with ether.
