Procedure
28.4 g of 2-methyl-4-(4'-fluoro-4-biphenylyl)-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid is dissolved in 100 ml of methanol; 15.4 g of K2CO3 is added and the mixture is stirred for 6 hours at 20°. It is then acidified with hydrochloric acid, 5.4 ml of hydrazine hydrate is added and the batch is boiled for 2 hours. Thereafter, it is again acidified; the solution is concentrated and cooled; and the 4-methyl-6-(4'-fluoro-4-biphenylyl)-2,3-dihydropyridazin-3-one obtained is filtered off and washed with water. m.p. 247°-248°.
