Procedure

To a solution of 2-benzylacrylic acid (1.02 g, 6.3 mmol) in dimethylformamide (10 ml) was added potassium carbonate (1.04 g, 7.6 mmol) and water (0.25 ml) with stirring. After 10 minutes, benzyl bromide (0.9 ml, 7.6 mmol) was added. After 3 hours, water was added and the resulting mixture was extracted with ether. The ether layer was washed 3 times with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered over silica gel, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting oil was distilled (70° C., 0.2 torr) to remove any unreacted starting material, then distilled (125° C., 0.2 torr) to yield 1.38 g (87%) of clear oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 3.7 (s, 2H), 5.2 (s, 2H), 5.5 (s, 1H), 6.3 (s, 1H), 7.2-7.6 (m, 10H).
