Procedure
A 0.9 ml portion of thiophosgene was added to a stirred mixture of 5.55 g of 6-amino-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylic acid, diphenylmethyl ester in 100 ml of ethyl acetate and 5.0 g of ammonium acetate in 50 ml of water. After stirring for 10-15 minutes concentrated ammonium hydroxide was added in increments over 5 hours. The layers were separated and the organic layer washed twice with brine, dried, evaporated to about 20 ml and chilled. The solid was collected, giving 2.385 g of the desired compound.
